What Is an Annealing Furnace? Principle, Temperature & Industrial Applications

An annealing furnace is a professional industrial heat treatment equipment specially used for metal annealing processing, widely applied in steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and alloy material manufacturing. As one of the most basic and essential heat treatment equipment in the metal processing industry, annealing furnaces focus on improving metal mechanical properties, eliminating internal residual stress, refining grain structure and optimizing material ductility and machinability, laying a foundation for subsequent stamping, bending, cutting and assembling processes.

 

The core working principle of an annealing furnace is thermal recrystallization. During cold processing such as rolling, stamping and bending, metal materials produce severe internal grain deformation and residual stress, resulting in increased hardness, decreased toughness and easy cracking during secondary processing. The annealing furnace heats the metal workpiece to the preset critical temperature, maintains constant temperature for a certain time to promote internal grain recrystallization and stress release, and then cools down at a controlled speed to form uniform and stable microstructure, restoring the metal’s original soft and ductile state.

 

Different metal materials have matched standard annealing temperature ranges. Low-carbon steel and ordinary structural steel adopt full annealing at 880–940°C or stress relief annealing at 600–750°C. Alloy steel and tool steel require precise temperature control of 760–880°C to avoid overheating and grain coarsening. Austenitic stainless steel needs high-temperature solution annealing at 1010–1150°C to dissolve carbide precipitates and restore corrosion resistance. Ferritic and martensitic stainless steel adapt to medium and low temperature annealing ranges of 650–850°C. Copper and aluminum alloy materials use low-temperature annealing below 600°C to achieve softening and stress relief.

 

Industrial annealing furnaces are divided into batch type and continuous type according to production mode. Batch annealing furnaces including box furnaces and vacuum furnaces are suitable for small-batch, multi-variety and high-precision parts processing. Continuous annealing furnaces represented by mesh belt furnaces and roller hearth furnaces are used for mass production of standardized strips, wires and small hardware parts. Equipped with protective atmosphere systems, annealing furnaces can realize bright annealing without oxidation, improving workpiece surface quality and reducing post-processing costs.

 

The core industrial applications of annealing furnaces cover almost all metal manufacturing fields. In steel processing, it softens raw steel materials for easy machining and forming. In stainless steel manufacturing, it realizes solution softening and surface brightening. In hardware and fastener industry, it eliminates cold heading stress to prevent product cracking. In electronic metal parts processing, it stabilizes material size and improves conductivity. In mold and mechanical parts production, it relieves processing residual stress to avoid subsequent deformation.

 

Modern annealing furnaces adopt intelligent PLC programmable control, multi-layer energy-saving insulation and precise temperature zoning technology, with stable temperature uniformity and low energy consumption. It is an indispensable basic equipment to ensure stable quality, qualified performance and long service life of metal products in the global manufacturing industry.
