Share:A nitriding furnace is a professional surface heat treatment equipment specially used for metal nitriding strengthening process, widely applied in high-precision mechanical parts, automotive components, gears, shafts and mold manufacturing. Different from quenching and tempering that improve overall metal performance, nitriding furnaces focus on surface micro-strengthening, infiltrating nitrogen atoms into metal surface lattice at low temperature to form a high-hardness, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant nitride layer. It is an essential equipment for improving the surface quality and service life of high-end metal parts.
The core working principle of a nitriding furnace is low-temperature chemical infiltration and surface phase transformation. Under closed and stable high-temperature environment (480–580°C), the nitriding furnace decomposes ammonia gas or other nitrogen-containing media into active nitrogen atoms. These active nitrogen atoms penetrate and diffuse into the surface of steel workpieces, reacting with iron, chromium, molybdenum and other metal elements in the steel to form stable hard nitride compounds. After a certain period of heat preservation and diffusion, a dense, uniform and high-hardness nitriding layer is formed on the workpiece surface, while the workpiece core maintains the original tough and stable mechanical structure, realizing the perfect combination of hard surface and tough core.
The complete industrial nitriding process of a nitriding furnace is divided into four standardized stages. The first stage is pre-treatment preparation, including workpiece surface degreasing, rust removal and cleaning to ensure no oil stains and impurities on the surface, avoiding affecting nitrogen atom infiltration. The second stage is furnace loading and sealing, placing workpieces evenly in the furnace chamber, closing the furnace door tightly and vacuumizing or filling protective gas to eliminate internal air and prevent oxidation.
The third stage is segmented nitriding treatment, the core process of equipment operation. First, heat the furnace to the preset nitriding temperature and keep warm to stabilize the internal temperature field; then introduce nitrogen-containing medium to start active nitrogen atom infiltration; adjust gas flow and pressure parameters according to workpiece material and required nitriding layer thickness, and maintain long-term constant-temperature diffusion to ensure uniform nitriding layer formation. The fourth stage is cooling and discharging, stopping gas supply after the nitriding process is completed, adopting furnace slow cooling or graded cooling to room temperature, and finally discharging and inspecting finished products.
Nitriding furnaces have irreplaceable core benefits in industrial metal processing. First, it achieves ultra-high surface hardness improvement: the surface hardness of nitrided steel parts can reach HV800–1200, far higher than ordinary quenching hardening, greatly improving workpiece wear resistance and scratch resistance. Second, it enhances corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance: the dense nitride layer isolates air and corrosive media, effectively preventing workpiece surface rust and chemical corrosion.
Third, the processing deformation is extremely small. Nitriding is completed at low temperature below 600°C, without high-temperature phase transformation and rapid cooling stress, and the workpiece dimensional deformation is controlled within 0.01mm, fully meeting the precision requirements of high-end mechanical parts. Fourth, it extends product service life: nitrided parts have strong fatigue resistance, effectively avoiding fatigue failure under long-term alternating load, and the service life can be increased by 2–3 times.
In addition, nitriding furnace processing has flexible adaptability, suitable for carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and tool steel parts. It is widely used in high-precision fields such as automotive transmission parts, mechanical gears, hydraulic components, precision molds and aerospace parts, becoming a key equipment for high-end metal product quality upgrading.
