In fact, tempering vs quenching has essential differences in process sequence, temperature range, working principle and final metal performance, and they must be matched reasonably to achieve optimal heat treatment effect.
Quenching is the high-temperature rapid cooling process before tempering. It heats steel parts to 800-1200℃ to reach austenite state, then cools rapidly through water, oil or gas to obtain ultra-high hardness martensite structure. The core purpose of quenching is to improve metal hardness, wear resistance and strength, but it will bring severe brittleness and huge residual stress.
Tempering is the low and medium temperature slow heat treatment after quenching. It does not change the basic hardness range of quenched parts greatly, but focuses on eliminating stress, reducing brittleness and stabilizing structure. Quenching is responsible for "hardening the metal", while tempering is responsible for "toughening the metal", and the two complement each other perfectly.
In industrial production, single quenching is meaningless and risky, which will lead to easy cracking of workpieces. Only the combined quenching and tempering process can produce metal parts with balanced hardness, toughness and stability, which is widely used in gears, shafts, molds and mechanical structural parts.
