Sintering Furnace Temperature Parameters for Ceramic and Powder Metallurgy

Sintering temperature is the most critical parameter determining the quality of sintered products. Too low temperature will lead to insufficient particle bonding, low product density, poor strength and easy fragmentation; too high temperature will cause material over-sintering, grain coarsening, product deformation and size deviation. Different powder metallurgy materials and ceramic materials have exclusive standard sintering furnace temperature parameters and soaking time. This article sorts out the most practical industrial sintering parameters for mainstream materials to standardize production processing.

 

1. Powder Metallurgy Sintering Furnace Parameters

 

Iron-based powder metallurgy parts: Standard sintering temperature 1100°C–1150°C, soaking time 2–3 hours. Adopt nitrogen-hydrogen mixed protective atmosphere to prevent iron powder oxidation. Suitable for ordinary mechanical structural parts, oil-containing bearings and gear accessories, ensuring high product density and mechanical strength.

 

Copper-based powder metallurgy parts: Sintering temperature 850°C–950°C, soaking time 1.5–2 hours. Low-temperature sintering avoids copper material melting and deformation, with inert gas protection to maintain bright surface. Widely used for electrical conductive parts and wear-resistant copper-based accessories.

 

Stainless steel powder parts: High-temperature sintering 1250°C–1350°C, vacuum or argon atmosphere. High temperature promotes full diffusion of stainless steel powder particles, improving product compactness and corrosion resistance, suitable for high-precision stainless steel sintered parts.

 

Tungsten steel and hard alloy powder: Ultra-high temperature sintering 1380°C–1450°C, pure vacuum environment. Ensure full bonding of hard alloy particles, obtain ultra-high hardness and wear resistance, used for cutting tools and mold accessories.

 

2. Industrial Ceramic Sintering Furnace Parameters

 

Ordinary structural ceramics: Sintering temperature 1100°C–1200°C, air atmosphere sintering. Suitable for daily ceramics and ordinary structural ceramic parts, with low sintering temperature and high cost performance.

 

Alumina ceramic (95%–99% alumina): High-precision sintering temperature 1550°C–1650°C, long-time soaking 3–4 hours. High temperature ensures high density and insulation performance of alumina ceramics, widely used for electronic insulating parts and precision structural ceramics.

 

Zirconia ceramic: Sintering temperature 1400°C–1500°C, strictly controlled heating and cooling speed. Zirconia ceramics have high toughness and wear resistance, requiring precise temperature control to avoid cracking and deformation.

 

Silicon carbide refractory ceramics: Ultra-high temperature sintering 1600°C–1700°C, suitable for high-temperature resistant industrial refractory parts, with excellent high-temperature stability after sintering.

 

3. New Energy & Special Material Sintering Parameters

 

Lithium battery positive and negative electrode materials: Sintering temperature 800°C–950°C, oxygen-containing atmosphere, ensuring material electrochemical activity.

 

Magnetic powder materials: Sintering temperature 900°C–1100°C, segmented temperature control to stabilize magnetic permeability and magnetic strength.

 

In actual production, the sintering furnace temperature needs to be adjusted according to product thickness and powder fineness. Thick blanks and fine powder materials need appropriately extended soaking time; ultra-thin precision parts need reduced heating speed to avoid deformation. Modern programmable sintering furnaces can store multiple material parameter curves, realizing one-click accurate sintering and effectively improving product qualification rate.
