Quenching Furnace Temperature Range for Different Steel Materials

Quenching Furnace Temperature Range for Different Steel Materials

Share:

Accurate temperature control is the core premise of qualified steel quenching processing. Different types of steel materials have distinct chemical compositions, grain structures and phase transformation characteristics, corresponding to exclusive quenching furnace temperature ranges. Improper temperature setting will lead to insufficient hardening, excessive brittleness, grain coarsening or workpiece cracking, directly causing unqualified product quality. Mastering standardized quenching temperature parameters for various steel types is essential for factory standardized production and defect rate reduction.

1. Carbon Steel Quenching Temperature Range

Low-carbon steel (Q235, 10#, 20# steel) has a quenching temperature range of 880–930°C. Low-carbon steel has low carbon content and poor quenching hardening performance, requiring higher heating temperature to complete full phase transformation. It is mostly used for structural parts quenching, and the furnace temperature must be stabilized within the standard range to avoid insufficient martensite formation and unimproved hardness. Medium-carbon steel (45#, 40Cr) is the most widely used structural steel, with a standard quenching temperature of 830–880°C. This temperature range ensures balanced hardness and toughness after quenching, suitable for shaft parts, bolts and mechanical structural components. High-carbon steel (T7, T8, T10) adapts to 780–830°C quenching temperature; excessively high temperature will cause grain coarsening and extreme brittleness, while low temperature leads to insufficient hardening.

2. Alloy Steel Quenching Temperature Range

Low-alloy structural steel (35CrMnSi, 20CrMnTi) has a quenching temperature of 820–870°C. Alloy elements improve steel hardenability, allowing slightly lower temperature while ensuring uniform hardening. High-strength alloy steel for engineering machinery adopts 850–900°C quenching temperature to maximize material strength and impact resistance. Carburized alloy steel for automotive parts needs precise temperature control at 800–850°C to avoid surface overheating and core under-hardening, ensuring layered performance consistency.

3. Tool Steel & Mold Steel Quenching Temperature Range

Carbon tool steel uses 760–810°C quenching temperature, focusing on maintaining high hardness and wear resistance while preventing cracking. Alloy tool steel (Cr12, Cr12MoV) for precision molds requires high-temperature quenching at 1000–1050°C; sufficient high-temperature heating dissolves alloy carbides to ensure uniform hardness and wear resistance of mold surfaces. High-speed tool steel for cutting tools adapts to 1180–1230°C ultra-high temperature quenching, which is the key to obtain high red hardness and cutting performance.

4. Stainless Steel Quenching Temperature Range

Martensitic stainless steel (410, 420, 440) has a quenching temperature of 980–1050°C, realizing hardening and strength improvement through high-temperature phase transformation. Precipitation hardening stainless steel requires 900–950°C solution quenching, matching subsequent aging treatment to improve comprehensive mechanical properties. Austenitic stainless steel generally does not undergo conventional quenching hardening, but adopts high-temperature solution treatment at 1010–1150°C to optimize corrosion resistance and ductility.

In actual industrial production, the quenching furnace temperature needs to reserve 30–50°C margin according to workpiece thickness and batch size. Thick workpieces require appropriately increased temperature or extended soaking time to ensure core phase transformation; thin precision parts need strict temperature limit to avoid thermal deformation. Modern programmable quenching furnaces can solidify exclusive temperature parameters for various steel materials, realizing one-click accurate heating, effectively avoiding quality problems caused by temperature deviation and improving quenching processing stability.
