Share:Low-temperature tempering furnaces and high-temperature tempering furnaces are classified according to industrial tempering temperature standards, with completely different processing effects, mechanical property adjustment directions and applicable industrial scenarios. Many manufacturers blindly use unified tempering equipment and parameters, resulting in unqualified product performance: high-wear parts have insufficient hardness, and structural parts have poor toughness. A clear comparison of the two tempering modes and their application ranges is essential for standardized heat treatment production.
1. Low Temperature Tempering Furnace (150°C – 250°C) Core Applications
Low-temperature tempering is designed to retain the ultra-high hardness and wear resistance of quenched workpieces, with minimal attenuation of material hardness while removing tiny quenching stress. The processed workpieces have high surface hardness, strong wear resistance and stable dimensional accuracy, no deformation during long-term precision operation.
Main applicable workpieces include all high-precision wear-resistant parts: tool steel cutting tools, measuring tools, precision gauges, cold work molds, bearing steel parts, precision gear shafts and ultra-precision mechanical accessories. These parts need to maintain high hardness to resist friction and wear, and low-temperature tempering perfectly balances stress relief and hardness retention.
Low-temperature tempering furnaces are mostly high-precision box batch furnaces and small mesh belt continuous furnaces, with strict temperature control accuracy to avoid excessive temperature leading to hardness decline. They are widely used in mold processing, precision machinery and tool manufacturing industries.
2. High Temperature Tempering Furnace (500°C – 650°C) Core Applications
High-temperature tempering is matched with quenching to form quenching and tempering treatment, which completely eliminates quenching residual stress, greatly improves steel toughness and impact resistance, and obtains the best comprehensive mechanical properties of high strength and high toughness. The workpiece hardness is moderately reduced, but the ductility and fatigue resistance are significantly improved.
Main applicable workpieces include all load-bearing structural parts: automotive engine parts, transmission shafts, mechanical structural brackets, high-strength bolts, construction machinery accessories, hydraulic parts and heavy-load gear components. These parts bear complex impact, tension and compression loads during operation, requiring high toughness to avoid brittle fracture.
High-temperature tempering furnaces are mostly large-scale continuous mesh belt furnaces and trolley batch furnaces, with excellent heat preservation performance and uniform temperature field, suitable for mass production of structural steel parts. They are the most widely used tempering equipment in machinery manufacturing and automotive industry.
Key Differences & Selection Guide
Low-temperature tempering prioritizes hardness and wear resistance, suitable for precision wear-resistant parts; high-temperature tempering prioritizes toughness and impact resistance, suitable for load-bearing structural parts. No cross substitution is allowed in industrial production. For example, using high-temperature tempering for cutting tools will lead to tool softening and poor cutting effect; using low-temperature tempering for automotive structural parts will lead to insufficient stress relief and easy part fracture.
Some special parts need segmented tempering processing with combined low and high temperature curves. Modern intelligent tempering furnaces can store multiple temperature programs, realizing flexible switching of different tempering processes to meet diversified production needs.
