Gas Nitriding Furnace vs Plasma Nitriding Furnace Comparison

Gas Nitriding Furnace vs Plasma Nitriding Furnace Comparison

Jul. 11, 2026

Share:

Gas nitriding furnaces and plasma nitriding furnaces are the two mainstream industrial nitriding equipment, widely used in metal surface strengthening processing. The two types of furnaces have huge differences in working principle, processing efficiency, nitriding quality, production cost and applicable scenarios. Many manufacturers face selection confusion in actual production, resulting in low processing efficiency or unqualified product quality. A comprehensive comparative analysis helps enterprises select the most suitable nitriding equipment according to production demands.

1. Working Principle Difference

Gas nitriding furnaces rely on thermal chemical infiltration principle. Under closed high-temperature environment (480–560°C), ammonia gas is thermally decomposed into active nitrogen atoms, which slowly diffuse and infiltrate into the workpiece surface to form nitride layer. The whole process relies on natural thermal diffusion, with stable reaction mechanism and simple equipment structure.

Plasma nitriding furnaces adopt plasma ionization acceleration principle. Under low-pressure vacuum environment, high-voltage electric field ionizes nitrogen-containing gas into high-energy plasma active particles. These high-energy particles bombard the workpiece surface at high speed, accelerating nitrogen atom infiltration and diffusion, realizing rapid formation of nitride layer. The reaction efficiency is far higher than natural thermal diffusion of gas nitriding.

2. Processing Efficiency & Cycle Difference

Gas nitriding has slow processing speed and long cycle. Affected by natural diffusion speed, it takes 10–35 hours to form qualified nitriding layer, with low hourly output, suitable for small-batch and low-efficiency production demands.

Plasma nitriding has ultra-high efficiency, shortening the nitriding cycle by 50%–70%. The accelerated infiltration of plasma particles can form uniform nitride layer in 3–12 hours, greatly improving production efficiency and batch output, perfectly matching mass production of standard parts.

3. Nitriding Quality & Precision Difference

Gas nitriding forms thick and uniform nitride layer with good wear resistance and fatigue resistance. The layer structure is stable, with no obvious interface difference, suitable for heavy-duty parts requiring thick strengthening layer. But it is easy to form loose nitride layer on the surface, requiring subsequent polishing treatment for high-precision parts.

Plasma nitriding has high processing precision, controllable nitriding layer thickness and compact surface structure without loose layer. The workpiece deformation is extremely small, with no surface oxidation and pollution, realizing one-time forming of high-precision parts without secondary processing. The disadvantage is that the maximum thickness of nitriding layer is limited, not suitable for parts requiring ultra-thick strengthening layer.

4. Production Cost & Energy Consumption Difference

Gas nitriding furnaces have low equipment investment cost, simple structure and convenient maintenance. But the long processing cycle leads to high unit energy consumption and large ammonia gas consumption, with high long-term operating cost.

Plasma nitriding furnaces have high upfront equipment investment, but short processing cycle and low gas and energy consumption. The comprehensive unit production cost is lower than gas nitriding, with high cost performance for long-term mass production.

5. Applicable Scenarios Selection

Choose gas nitriding furnaces for heavy-duty molds, large mechanical parts and workpieces requiring ultra-thick nitriding layer, small-batch customized production and low-cost processing demands.

Choose plasma nitriding furnaces for high-precision mechanical parts, automotive components, thin-wall precision workpieces and mass standardized production pursuing high efficiency and zero deformation.
